Next Generation Science Standards
What is the Next Generation Science Standards?
New York State Board of Education has partnered with the National Research Council and other state education departments to review the Next Generation Science Standards as the basis for science education in New York State. NGSS is based on the book titled, A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas (Framework). The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) provides opportunities to improve upon science education and reflects a pedagogical shift in the educational practices of American science education.
Some of the conceptual shifts include:
1. The Framework and NGSS promotes active engagement of scientific and engineering practices. The Framework combines Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ides in Science.
a. Practices refer to the ways in which the scientific community develops models to represent natural phenomena, making predictions, carrying out controlled experiment, acquiring data, and evaluating data to find patterns and relationships.
b. Crosscutting Concepts are the ways in which scientists organize ideas so that those ideas are useful (e.g. cause-effect relationships).
c. Core Ideas helps students to develop an understanding of basic scientific explanations, connecting them to real world situations, and applying this understanding to solve real world problems.
2. NGSS clarifies student expectations and provides a deeper understanding of content as well as how science content is applied to everyday life. In a nutshell, less topics will be taught, however, scientific topics will be taught with more depth.
3. NGSS is aligned with the current Common Core State Standards for both English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Elementary school curriculum is in the process of transitioning from the prior NYS Curriculum (Grades K-4, 5-8) to NGSS (Grades K-5).

The following is a list of topics that will be covered in Kindergarten.
Note: Curriculum for each grade level is posted on John F. Kennedy School’s Science Lab Website. You can access this information by going to the JFK Webpage, click on Science in the Special Areas box, and click on Curriculum.
